The Griezmann Effect: How a World Champion Is Changing Orlando City

There was a time when Orlando City SC needed to convince the soccer world to pay attention.

Now, the soccer world is paying attention to Orlando.

The arrival of Antoine Griezmann has transformed the atmosphere surrounding the Lions, giving the club one of the most recognizable players in world soccer and a new sense of possibility heading into the second half of the 2026 Major League Soccer season.

Griezmann, the 2018 FIFA World Cup champion and Atlético Madrid’s all-time leading scorer, officially joined Orlando City this summer after a decorated European career with Real Sociedad, Atlético Madrid and FC Barcelona. Before arriving in Central Florida, he had accumulated 298 goals and 132 assists in 792 professional appearances.

But statistics only tell part of the story.

In Orlando, Griezmann has quickly become more than a designated player. He has become a symbol of what the club—and MLS—believes it can become.

A Star Arrives in the City Beautiful

Griezmann’s move to Orlando was not simply another transfer. For the Frenchman, it was the fulfillment of a dream.

During his introduction, the 35-year-old said he had wanted to play in MLS since he was 18. He also made it clear that he did not view the move as a vacation or the final stop of his career. He wanted to arrive while he was still physically and mentally capable of performing at a high level.

That attitude immediately resonated with Orlando supporters.

The Lions had struggled through the first portion of the season and entered the post-World Cup restart outside the playoff places. The club needed more than a famous name. It needed a player capable of changing games.

Griezmann wasted little time.

In his MLS debut against the San Jose Earthquakes, Orlando produced a stunning 4-0 victory. Griezmann scored his first MLS goal, created a game-high five chances and helped give the Lions an attacking presence they had been missing.

His goal was also historic. It was the 300th club goal of Griezmann’s professional career.

Suddenly, Orlando City looked different.

More Than Goals

The most impressive part of Griezmann’s impact has not necessarily been the goals.

It has been everything happening around them.

Orlando has used him primarily as a free-roaming No. 10, allowing him to move between the midfield and attack, find open spaces and dictate the tempo. His vision, first touch and ability to play through defenses have given the Lions another dimension. MLS analysis using Opta data has highlighted his ability to create through balls and progress the ball, while his movement allows teammates to find additional space.

Perhaps even more important, his work rate has made an impression on his teammates.

In his first six appearances, Griezmann ran nearly seven miles in his debut and quickly established himself as someone willing to defend and work without the ball. Teammates have described the effect as contagious: if a World Cup champion is willing to sprint back and help the team, everyone else has to be willing to do the same.

That leadership has been especially valuable for Orlando’s younger players.

Teenage homegrown Justin Ellis, who grew up watching Griezmann play for France and Atlético Madrid, has already developed a promising connection with the superstar. Their chemistry was on display in San Jose when Ellis assisted Griezmann for his first MLS goal—and the two even celebrated with Griezmann’s famous dance.

The relationship represents something larger than one goal.

Griezmann is now playing alongside players who grew up watching him.

He has gone from being a television star to being the veteran in the locker room.

A Mural Fit for a Global Star

Orlando’s reaction to Griezmann’s arrival has extended well beyond Inter&Co Stadium.

In July, a striking new mural appeared on the side of Anh Hong restaurant at the intersection of Mills Avenue and East Colonial Drive in the Mills 50 district.

The photorealistic, one-story mural features Griezmann alongside the words “Welcome to Orlando,”surrounded by imagery connected to his soccer career. Deep Orlando City purple dominates the artwork, creating a visual connection between the French superstar and his new club. The mural was created by Orlando artist Steve Teller.

It is difficult to imagine a better representation of what Griezmann’s arrival means to the city.

Murals are permanent.

Transfers are not always.

But Orlando has already begun treating Griezmann as part of the city’s soccer identity.

The supporters took that enthusiasm even further for his home debut. Orlando’s Iron Lion Firm and Ruckus Orlando organized an elaborate welcome, including a massive two-part tifo display inspired by iconic French artwork. Supporters spent roughly two weeks preparing the display by hand, making it the largest such display in the club’s history at the time.

For a club that once welcomed global stars such as Kaká, Nani and Pato, the supporters made it clear that Griezmann felt different.

He was not simply another famous player.

He felt like the beginning of something.

The MLS Griezmann Spotlight

Orlando City is benefiting from Griezmann’s arrival, but so is Major League Soccer.

MLS has embraced Griezmann as one of the faces of its new era.

The league has featured him prominently across its website, social media platforms, broadcasts and promotional content. His MLS debut was immediately turned into a league-wide moment, with the official MLS account celebrating his first goal and highlighting his impact.

His presence has also become part of MLS’s larger post-World Cup narrative.

Following the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, the league is attempting to turn the enormous attention generated by the tournament into lasting interest in domestic soccer. Griezmann is a perfect player for that mission: a World Cup winner, European superstar and internationally recognizable personality who chose MLS while he still believes he can contribute at a high level.

MLS has also used Griezmann in major promotional settings outside Orlando. He appeared at Fanatics Fest in New York, where fans were able to meet the new Orlando star as MLS attempted to maintain momentum following the World Cup.

And the league is not hiding from the significance of his arrival.

MLS players themselves have spoken about the “Griezmann effect,” suggesting that bringing players of his caliber into the league immediately raises the level and visibility of the competition.

A New Chapter for Orlando

The numbers already suggest that Griezmann’s arrival has mattered.

As of August 24, he had started all six of Orlando’s regular-season matches since joining the club, playing all 540 minutes and producing three goals and two assists. Orlando’s record in those six games was 3-2-1, with every opponent sitting in playoff position at the time.

Most recently, Griezmann scored both goals in a 2-1 comeback victory over Real Salt Lake, earning his first MLS brace and being voted the league’s Player of the Matchday.

Those results do not mean Griezmann can single-handedly solve every problem Orlando City has. Soccer remains a team sport, and the Lions will need contributions from across the roster if they hope to make a serious playoff run.

But something has undeniably changed.

The team plays with more confidence.

Young players have a world-class example beside them.

Supporters have a new hero.

And MLS has another global superstar to put at the center of its story.

The mural on Mills Avenue may have been painted as a welcome.

But looking at Griezmann’s first weeks in Orlando, it increasingly feels like something else.

It feels like a statement.
